I’m seven.”

The address on his screen pointed to a working-class neighborhood at the edge of town, where houses sat close together behind short chain-link fences and people tended to notice whose car was—or wasn’t—in the driveway.

“Ashley, are you alone?”

She went quiet long enough for Eric to hear her breathing. Stay on the phone with me, okay? You’re doing exactly the right thing.”

When Officer Natalie reached the house, almost every light was off. Rainwater streamed from the porch roof. The mailbox leaned toward the curb, and behind the front window, a curtain shifted.

Natalie knocked softly. “Ashley? It’s Natalie. I’m here to help.”

The door opened less than an inch. One frightened eye appeared in the gap.

“You’re not gonna yell at me?”

Natalie crouched so the little girl would not have to stare up at a uniform. “No, sweetheart. Nobody is going to yell at you.”

The door slowly opened wider.

Ashley stood barefoot on the cold floor wearing one of her father’s oversized T-shirts and clutching a worn stuffed puppy by one ear. Her lips were cracked, her arms looked painfully thin, and her stomach was swollen beneath the cotton.

Natalie felt anger push into her chest, but she forced it down. Ashley needed steady hands, not another frightened adult.

Inside, the refrigerator held little more than a cloudy container of soup and a bottle of mustard. There were no fresh groceries, no medicine on the counter, and no sign that anyone had prepared for a seven-year-old to spend several days alone.

Then Natalie looked at the kitchen table.

A handwritten grocery list sat there in careful block letters:

Rice. Chicken. Electrolyte drinks. Ashley’s medicine.

Beside the phone was another note:

Urgent appointment. Call first thing Monday.

Natalie stared at both pieces of paper.

Those did not look like the last-minute thoughts of a father preparing to abandon his child. They looked like the unfinished plans of someone who fully expected to come home.

By then, neighbors had started gathering beyond the fence. One woman folded her arms under a raincoat and said loudly enough for everyone to hear, “I knew Andrew couldn’t handle raising a little girl by himself.”

Another neighbor raised a phone. “That poor child. He abandoned her.”

Natalie looked from the urgent note to Ashley, who was now swaying in the doorway.

“Ashley, I’m going to pick you up now.”

The girl nodded once.

Natalie slid one arm behind her back and the other beneath her knees.

Ashley whispered, “Please don’t leave Buddy.”

“I won’t.”

Natalie had barely lifted her when Ashley’s body suddenly went limp.

The stuffed puppy slipped from her hand toward the wet porch boards as Natalie caught her tighter and shouted into her radio, “Minor unconscious. Possible severe dehydration. Send medical now.”

The neighbors stopped talking.

Natalie pressed two fingers to Ashley’s neck, found a faint pulse, and pulled the child beneath her rain jacket. When the paramedics arrived, they moved fast, checking Ashley’s breathing, starting fluids, and carrying her toward the ambulance while Natalie followed with Buddy tucked under one arm.

Before the doors closed, Ashley opened her eyes for only a moment.

“Is Daddy coming?” she whispered.

Natalie could have given her an easy answer. Instead, she took the girl’s hand.

“We’re going to find out where he is.”

Back inside the house, Natalie returned to the kitchen table. She photographed the grocery list and the appointment note, then noticed something she had missed the first time: the pen used to write them was still uncapped beside the phone, as if Andrew had put it down in the middle of planning his next morning.

His wallet was not there. His car was gone. But Ashley’s medicine bottle, nearly empty, sat beside a pharmacy receipt dated four days earlier.

Natalie called dispatch. Andrew’s name had not appeared in any arrest report, jail intake, or hospital admission under the information they had checked so far. No neighbor remembered seeing him leave with luggage. No one had watched him pack the car. One neighbor had simply noticed the driveway empty—and the story of an abandoning father had grown from there.

Natalie walked back onto the porch as rain struck the railing.

The woman who had accused Andrew lowered her eyes. “So you think he didn’t leave her?”

Natalie looked through the open doorway toward the kitchen table, where a father’s grocery list still waited for groceries that had never arrived.

“This does not look like abandonment,” she said. “Something happened to him.”

And now the question was no longer why Andrew had left his daughter alone.

It was what could stop a father who had written down her medicine, planned her food, promised to be gone thirty minutes—and then vanished for four days without making a single call home.

──────────────────────
Type DAD and I’ll continue.
(I know you’re curious about the next part, so please be patient and read on in the comments below.

[1

post-1004","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-family-drama-stories
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 -
