
Natalie looked through the open doorway toward the kitchen table, where a father’s grocery list still waited for groceries that had never arrived.
“This does not look like abandonment,” she said. “Something happened to him.”
And now the question was no longer why Andrew had left his daughter alone.
It was what could stop a father who had written down her medicine, planned her food, promised to be gone thirty minutes—and then vanished for four days without making a single call home.
