I closed my eyes.
“What more?”
Carter lowered her voice.
“We found a file with your name on it.”
“What’s in it?”
“Your deployment schedule. Your travel records. Copies of financial statements. And notes about when you were expected to return home.”
The room seemed to tilt beneath me.
Derek had known my schedule.
He had known I was coming back.
And he had known exactly how much time he had before I walked through that front door.
But the final detail Carter gave me was the one that changed everything.
“Major, there’s a date written on the last page.”
“What date?”
“Tomorrow.”
I stared at Lily sleeping peacefully beneath the hospital blanket.
Tomorrow.
Whatever Derek had been preparing for, he hadn’t planned for me to come home early.
And suddenly, the cruise didn’t look like a vacation anymore.
It looked like an alibi.
The money wasn’t simply stolen.
The locked room wasn’t simply hidden.
And my husband’s frantic warning wasn’t about protecting our family.
It was about buying him time.
Carter called again before I could process the thought.
“Major, there’s one more thing.”
“What?”
“The person who installed the hidden room wasn’t Derek.”
I sat down slowly.
“Then who was it?”
“Your aunt.”
I couldn’t speak.
My late aunt had owned the house before me. She had always told me it was a safe place, a place I could return to whenever life became difficult.
Now police had found a concealed room she had built without telling me.
And inside that room were records of my life, photographs taken without my knowledge, and a file prepared for a date that hadn’t arrived yet.
I looked at my daughter.
Then I looked at the phone in my hand.
For six months, I had believed I was away from home.
Now I understood something much worse.
Someone had been preparing for my return long before I ever knew I was coming back.
