My Mother Threw Us Out

“Open it.”

I looked at her hands.

Then at her face.

Then at the envelope.

Inside the house, Daniel still had Dad on the line.

Down the hallway, Lily was asleep after the worst Christmas dinner of her short life.

And standing on my porch was the mother who had thrown us out over money, holding documents connected to a house I had never known my grandmother had left me.

I finally raised my hand toward the envelope.

But before my fingers closed around it, I understood that whatever those papers said, one thing had already changed.

I was no longer trying to convince Diane that I wasn’t a leech.

I was no longer arguing about a repaid loan.

I was no longer standing in her dining room letting her decide what I supposedly owed the family.

This was my doorway.

My husband was beside me.

My daughter was safe inside.

My father was listening.

And the papers were still in Diane’s hands.

So instead of taking them immediately, I held out my palm and waited for her to let go.
